Numbers appear in the footer area. Preview to make sure they don't overlap with existing footer content.
Footer Placement Best Practices
Bottom-center is the most universally acceptable position. It works for single-sided and double-sided documents alike. Most style guides default to this when they don't specify a particular position.
For documents meant to be printed double-sided and bound, alternating left-right footer numbers look more polished. Even pages get bottom-left, odd pages get bottom-right (or vice versa). This keeps numbers on the outside edge, away from the binding.
Footer numbers sit in the bottom margin, typically about 0.5 inches from the page edge. If your document already has footer content (like a company name or date), choose a position that doesn't overlap. Bottom-right numbers work well alongside a bottom-left company name.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I place numbers on alternating sides for double-sided printing?
The tool supports fixed positioning. For alternating left-right placement, you'd need to number odd and even pages separately. Fixed bottom-center works for both single and double-sided prints.
My document already has a footer. Will numbers overlap?
If your existing footer uses the same position, yes. Choose a different horizontal alignment — if your footer text is left-aligned, put page numbers on the right.
How far from the bottom edge are the numbers placed?
About 0.4 inches (10mm) from the bottom edge by default. This matches standard footer margins in most word processors.
