  2. 2

Instagram's Actual Dimension Requirements

Instagram displays feed photos at 1080px wide. Square posts are 1080x1080. Portrait (the tallest feed format) is 1080x1350 — a 4:5 ratio. Landscape is 1080x566. If you upload anything wider than 1080px, Instagram downscales it. Upload smaller and it upscales, which looks soft.

Stories and Reels use 1080x1920 (9:16 ratio). This matches the full screen of most phones. Carousels follow the same rules as single posts — all slides must share the same aspect ratio, and the first image sets it for the whole carousel.

The 1080px width limit means there's no benefit to uploading a 4000px wide photo. Instagram compresses it down anyway and applies its own JPG compression at around 70% quality. Giving it a pre-sized, well-compressed image often results in better final quality than letting Instagram do all the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should an Instagram profile picture be?

Instagram recommends 320x320 pixels for profile pictures, but displays them at just 110x110 on mobile and 180x180 on desktop. Upload at 320x320 for the sharpest result.

Why does my photo look blurry after posting?

Usually because you uploaded a very large image and Instagram's compression was aggressive. Try resizing to exactly 1080px wide before uploading, and save as JPG at 85-90% quality. This gives Instagram less work to do and preserves more detail.

Can I post a horizontal photo without cropping?

Yes, using landscape format at 1080x566 (1.91:1 ratio). It will display with white or black bars on some screens. If you prefer a full-width look, resize to 1080x1080 and accept that the sides get cropped, or add blurred borders.
